P4A glass, P6B glass or P8B glass?

We will be happy to explain the somewhat confusing terminology of DIN EN 356. There are 5 low security classes (orange and light blue) and 3 high (dark blue). Only those marked in dark blue offer effective burglary protection.

Impact resistance glazing

The 5 low classifications P1A glass, P2A glass, P3A glass, P4A glass & P5A glass prevent the glass pane being smashed in, e.g. with a stone. It does not offer traditional burglary protection. For that reason it is also called only "impact-resistant glazing"

Burglar resistance glazing

The 3 high resistance classes P6B glass, P7B glass & P8B glass offer burglary protection and are accordingly called burglar-resistant glass, P8B glass offering the highest level of burglary protection.

Test methods according to EN 356

The security difference between impact-resistant glass (P1A to P5A glass) and burglar-resistant glass (P6B, P7B, P8B glass) is extreme. The biggest difference is between P5A glass and P6B glass and can be compared to apples and pears - namely not at all.

As the testing methods are very different: with impact-resistant glass (P1A to P5A glass), a heavy steel ball of around 4 kg is dropped several times on the glass from various heights. By contrast, burglar-resistant glass (P6B, P7B, P8B glass) is dealt with significantly more harshly: using an axe.

It generally comprises five different layers. In different thicknesses. A mix of highly transparent and extremely impact-resistant materials. The structure of P4A glass

The construction of P4A glass is surprisingly simple. Two glass panes with a wafer-thin plastic foil in the middle. That’s it. The film holds the glass fragments together even if they are shattered, preventing injuries. But burglary protection? No. Not with P4A glass.
