Glass-clad polycarbonate

GLASS-CLAD POLYCARBONATE: HARDNESS MEETS RESILENCE
SILATEC BULLETPROOF GLASS COMBINES THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Our hardened glass is extraordinarily scratch-resistant and rigid, but it is the combination with impact-resistant polycarbonate that makes SILATEC bulletproof glass impenetrable. By sandwiching panels of transparent polycarbonate between sheets of glass, we have achieved an unsurpassed level of resilience coupled with hardness. Our armored glass is uniquely burglar-resistant, bulletproof and can even be provided in explosion-proof variants. It is not only significantly more secure, much thinner and – thanks to the polycarbonate – much lighter than convention armoured glass, it is also crystal clear and distortion-free.

Glass-clad polycarbonate technology
Bonding glass and polycarbonate posed a challenge, as polycarbonate expands and contracts much faster than glass in response to temperature changes. This conflict between the volumetric thermal expansion coefficients of the two materials would cause the layers of a laminated glass pane to separate over time due to exposure to the sun and changing seasons.

SILATEC engineers found the solution to the dilemma by developing a special adhesive for this purpose: it securely bonds the glass and polycarbonate, yet remains elastic at all times. As a result, the inseparable layers form an unbeatable combination of strength and flexibility. These qualities, alongside exceptional transparency, make glass-clad polycarbonate by SILATEC the bulletproof glazing solution of choice – especially where traditional armoured glass has reached its limits, for example, wherever safety glass must be very thin, light and absolutely secure.
