The official experts state it clearly: The mechanical burglary protection has priority over the electronic protection. “Electronic burglary protection” covers, for example, the alarm system, security cameras, etc. And these devices only report the burglary, however, they do not prevent it.
In addition: Alarm systems may even encourage burglars. Because the culprit sees, that there are valuables to be stolen. In contrast, “mechanical burglary protection” provides burglarproof windows and burglarproof glass and only those objects can hinder the potential culprit against entering the building. The alarm system cannot replace this protection, however, it can supplement it. Also to be recommended: Trained guard dogs. Ideally one for the inside and one on the outside.
Test standards for burglar resisting windows offer a first orientation. But: Are there any burglars that conform to the standards? Let us look at RC2 windows. Based on the test standard it offers three minutes of resistance. However, in practice it is already broken open in about one minute. Why? If the burglar finds that he cannot open the RC2 window, then he attacks the glass. And now it progresses fast: Because the P4A glass that the standard specifies is broken within ten seconds! The standard does not even test the glass.
In addition: The test engineer may during the test only use small tools such as a screwdriver. However, if the real burglar comes with a larger tool, then the RC2 window is quickly opened. It is similar for burglarproof RC3 and RC4 windows: The glass is also not tested here. While the RC3 resists for five minutes, the glass that the standard specified - namely P5A glass - is already destroyed after 15 seconds. The RC4 window achieves already ten minutes, the glass only 30 seconds (traditional P6B).

Retrofitting represents no problem in case of the fixed glazing. For pivot-tilt windows normally after construction year 1980. Normally we exchange glass and fittings and equip these with a mushroom head lock. The highest number of safety windows in private residences are RC3 and RC4 windows. In combination with SILATEC P6B or P8B glass, they offer effective or even perfect burglary protection. RC2 windows still present basic protection, while RC5 and RC6 windows are normally over-dimensioned for private residences.
Namely by the burglars themselves. We experience about 100 burglaries per year, or better: Burglary attempts, and this since more than 20 years. Based on this, we develop the safest safety solutions in the world; this means burglarproof windows up to the highest resistance classes. What does the experience show? As a matter of principle, the following is valid: The higher the expected booty, the higher the effort, on the other hand: the longer the burglary lasts, the higher the probability that the attacker will give up.
And it should not be forgotten: to be able to hammer for only five minutes with an ax on a pane needs an almost inhuman physical condition. Other major questions: How high is the discovery risk? Is the burglarproof window covered or clearly visible? How does the burglar proceed and what tool does he use? How are the escape option and how fast are the action forces at the location? Is this a residential area or a vacation home? By the way: Burglary attempts in vacation homes take place if the residents are at the location. Because the promise of booty is significantly higher.
The test standard does in part not test the glass - and glass is specified that can be destroyed quickly! The burglar is in this case quickly in the building. This is comparable to a tested and certified security rope for mountain climbing - with a brittle carabiner.
Therefore, the RC2-RC6 windows are only really burglarproof when using SILATEC glass: safe frame, safe glass. By the way, one is by all means more careful in other standards for windows and doors: the door frame as well as the glass will of course be tested for burglary resisting escape doors or panic doors and also for full penetration resisting windows.

The burglary protection is advantageous also with respect to the financial performance of your property. Respectively equipped windows do not only provide a good feeling and an increased quality of life but also a measurable value increase of the building. Finally, safety questions become increasingly more critical value factors. They can also be an exclusion criterion during the sale if a burglarproof window can only be retrofitted with difficulties. Because safety is mandatory for upscale residences.
“RC” is the abbreviation for “Resistance Class”. The previous abbreviation “WK” is therefore obsolete.
Based on this standard, burglarproof windows are categorized ascending from RC1 to RC6 windows. RC1 windows offer the smallest, practically no burglary protection, RC6 offers the highest protection - and this is also reflected in the price. While RC2 windows offer an acceptable basic protection, RC3 and RC4 windows offer a meaningful and effective burglary protection.
“RC” means “Resistance Class”, the class in which the window will be tested. Meaningful burglary protection starts with the resistance class 2, i.e. RC2, RC3 and RC4 are found most often for private residences and RC5 and RC6 are used for especially exposed risks.
RC2 N windows are less burglarproof than RC2 windows, because normal window glass is installed here. This can be broken by throwing a rock and the burglar is in the building in a few seconds.
Burglars try to crank windows open. For example with screwdrivers, wedges, crowbars. Or they break the glass pane.
An unlocked handle is a safety risk, for example, if the culprit can hammer a hole in the glass and afterwards simply opens the handle. However: Who locks all the windows before leaving the house? And opens all again? More meaningful than lockable window handles is resistant safety glass.
Roller blinds do not offer any burglary protection.
Of course, we deliver burglarproof windows also with an alarm system. However, only the mechanical resistance can hold the burglar really back. With a safe window and a safe glass.
Of course. This is a special construction with many tons of weight and special locks. Based on the extreme hazard potential, even the highest class - i.e. RC6 windows and doors - does normally not provide adequate protection.
Zero burglary protection.
Basic protection. Based on the standard, the RC2 window must withstand an amateur thief for three minutes - however: a practiced burglar breaks the RC2 window already after approx. one minute. The glass pane breaks already after 10 seconds! Pardon?
Yes, as mentioned above: The glass is not tested by the standard, only P4A glass is specified. And this can be broken within 15 seconds.
If RC2 widows are used, then SILATEC P6B should be used because it withstands an attack for ten minutes.
Effective burglary protection for private residences. The standard specifies that RC3 windows must withstand a practiced burglar for about five minutes; even against a massive crowbar. However, the glass is not tested, only P5A glass is specified. This can be broken in 15 seconds even by unpracticed culprits. Therefore the recommendation: SILATEC P6B glass - it withstand for more than five minutes, exactly as long as the window. Equipped in this manner, RC3 windows offer a balanced relationship between costs and burglary protection.
Perfect burglary protection for private residences: The resistance duration for RC4 windows is approximately twice as long as for RC4 windows - which is also reflected in the price. An RC4 window delays even an experience burglar with chisel, crowbar, ax or power drill for approximately 10 minutes.
The standard does not test the glass even for RC4 windows! The standard only specifies normal P6B glass - and that is already broken after about 30 seconds! In contrast, SILATEC P6B glass offers already five minutes protection, even better qualified is SILATEC P8B with 10 to 20 minutes protection. Frame and glass should be equally safe.
Exceptional burglary protection for private residences: RC5 windows withstand a total of 15 minutes even against experienced culprits - against electrical tool, e. g. power drill, jigsaw or saber saw and angle grinder with a disk diameter of 125 mm. The glazing is tested for this application. The recommendation: SILATEC P8B with up to 20 minutes. The RC5 window is normally over-dimensioned for the use in private residences.
The highest burglary protection for private residences: More than 20 minutes protection even against experience culprits with powerful electrical tools, e. g. power drill, jigsaw or saber saw and angle grinder with a disk diameter of 250 mm. The glazing will also be tested for this application. Same recommendation: SILATEC P8B with up to 20 minutes resistance duration. RC6 windows are rather qualified for extremely endangered objects like nuclear power plants.
