Only hope helps when using normal P7B glass - also called “armored glass”: Because it is already hammered in after a few 30 seconds! In contrast, SILATEC P7B glass offers effective burglary protection because it withstands the same attack for approximately 10 minutes3. A wall of glass. Because only SILATEC P7B glass includes polycarbonate and an intelligent combination of extremely resistant and impact resisting materials.
In 80% of the cases, the burglars want to come through the window. However, you are better protected with P7B2 glazing by SILATEC. The wall of glass protects your property as if it were a fortress. This is also applicable for museums, galleries or display windows, for example, for jewelers. P7B glass, as a burglary resisting glazing, is in accordance with the European standard EN 356. Our P8B glazing is recommended in case of even higher exposed risks.
The top jeweler Bulgari also trusts SILATEC’s safety glass. Lucky him. Because, when two burglars tried to break the display window at the headquarters in Rome in the middle of the day using a stolen tow truck, they received their well deserved reward. The glass splinters, but the wall of glass stands! The perplexed burglars try to flee, however, they are quickly picked up by the police. Burglary? No breakage! An impressive example shows that tests and standards are important, however, in the end the daily practice is what counts. And this is where SILATEC stands reliably against any criminal inferno: more than thousand times in the last ten years alone.
Polycarbonate is the difference. And P7B2 glass by SILATEC includes this extremely impact resisting material. This is supported by special adhesives and materials, developed by SILATEC for this purpose. The polycarbonate core is coated on both sides with different materials, which intelligently combine a variety of characteristics - for a high degree of safety. The outside surfaces of our P7B consist of glass. The result: a completely transparent pane that offers a significantly2 higher burglary protection than normal armored glass. In addition, the weight is significantly lower that the green tinted armored glass chunk. This means that windows and doors can be opened easily.

SILATEC P7B glass with polycarbonate coreFor comparison: normal P7B glass, also called “armored glass”. The design is simple: Pane pane on pane, the more the “better”, and the higher the “protection” against hammering-in. However, when compared with the impact resistance of SILATEC P7B glass, then this green chunk breaks hopelessly down. And when layering more glass panes on each other, then this monster becomes heavier and more green tinted.

conventional P7B glassSILATEC P7B glass is available starting with a glass thickness of approx. 23 mm. We offer the double glazing with a glass thickness starting at approx. 34 mm if you are interested in an improved heat protection. The triple insulating glass achieves even better insulation values - the glass thickness in this case is starting at approx. 46 mm. Of course, the glass thickness must be slightly increased for larger formats - for static reasons. However, SILATEC P7B glass has in any case a significantly slimmer design than the “armored glass” (the name says it all), which means traditional P7B glass.
You decide the value for the safety of your love ones, your art and other valuables. The price depends on the requirement for how long the safety glass must prevent that a hole is knocked into the pane - whether with a sledgehammer or an ax.
A hole breaks through already after approx. ½ minute when using normal “armored glass”, which means conventional P7B glass. The price is approx. 400 EUR/m2 net. Which means, approx. 800 EUR/m2 per minute protection impact.
SILATEC P7B2 withstands approximately 10 minutes. The price: approx. 700 EUR/m2 - this comes to only approx. 70 EUR/m2 per minute protective impact.
The additional costs for double insulating glass as sun protection or heat protection glass is approx. 20% to 30%. Approx. additional 20% for triple insulating glass. However, the payback is significant: Because the energy consumption in winter is lower by approx. 30% when compared with double insulating glass.
Traditional P7B glass (armored glass): approx. 800 EUR/m2, per minute protection against hammering down SILATEC P7B glass approx. 70 EUR/m2, per minute protection against hammering down
Unbelievable: The standard for RC2 to RC6 windows does not test the glass at all. P5A glass is recommended for RC3 - however, this glass can be quickly hammered in by any burglar with an average talent. What value has the safe frame in this case? RC3 windows delay a burglar for approx. 5 minutes, for example, if the burglar uses a crowbar. We recommend here SILATEC P6B2 or P7B2 glass since the glass should be safe in a similar manner.

The recommendation is valid especially for burglary resisting windows in private homes with the burglary protection class RC3 windows. SILATEC P8B2 glass is recommended for even higher protection needs, for example, for RC4 to RC6 windows, which must provide resistance for 10 or even 20 minutes. It is logical that a respectively safe glass is mandatory for safe window frames. The following glass recommendations are therefore valid for burglary resisting RC2 - RC4 windows:
| Type | Name | Dimensions max. [mm] | Thickness [mm] | Weight [kg/m2] | U* [W/m2K] | & | TL* [%] | g* [%] | Rw [dB] | Options | Tc | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AS | AW | Sus | |||||||||||
| (mm) (kg/m2) | They depend on the size of the pane, the loads (e.g. wind load) as well as guidelines and regulations |
| mono, i2, i3 | monolithic, insulating glass, triple insulating glass |
| U | Thermal transfer coefficient. The smaller the value, the better the heat insulation. |
| Kr | Krypton |
| Ar | Argon |
| TL | Translucence. A larger value means that more light transfers through the glazing |
| g | Total energy permeability. A smaller value means that less energy transfers through the glazing. |
| Rw | Sound insulation measure. The larger the value, the better the sound insulation. The listed values are based on a Krypton filling. |
| AS | Alarm loop. Visible or invisible. |
| AW | Alarm wire |
| SuS | Sun protection coating |
1) | Test certificate |
All values are subject to the common tolerances. Adherence to our special glazing guideline is required.

Our P7B glazing can also be ordered with an alarm loop. In addition to the mechanical burglary protection, the P7B glass also includes a burned-in alarm loop. It will be cut in case of an attack and it activates the connected alarm system. You have the choice between a visible alarm loop at a size of approx. 50 mm and a position in the corner of the P7B glass, or you order the invisible alarm loop, which is covered by the window frame, because it gets burned-in at the extreme edge of the P7B glass pane.
The simple, i.e. monolithic P7B pane also has the lowest heat insulation: However, the U-value is anyhow approx. 4.6 W/m2K. This comes with a thickness of only approx. 23 mm. The P7B glazing with a double insulating glass offers better heat insulation: The U-value is reduced to approx. 0.9 to 1.3 W/m2K. You achieve the optimal heat insulation with the triple glazed P7B panes: They offer a U-value of approx/ 0.5 to 0.7 W/m2K.
The lower the U-value the higher are your energy savings.

P5A glassP4A glass offers hardly any burglary protection. The standard for P4A glass states that only a steel ball with a weight of approx. 4 kg will be dropped onto the glass pane. This means specifically: The glass can prevent that, for example, a stone will be thrown through the pane. However, it is powerless against an ax or a sledgehammer. This is the opposite for P7B2 glass by SILATEC: the ax and the sledgehammer are powerless. We have no knowledge about any successful burglary attempt anywhere in the world.
The test uses an ax that hit the P7B glass with an exactly defined force and placed exactly down to a millimeter. For this test, the ax is fixated on a machine. The certification in accordance with EN 356 depends on the number of hits that the ax needs to hammer a hole with a size of 400 x 400 mm. A P7B glazing is achieved after a minimum of 51 hits and a P8B glass is certified after 71 ax hits.
As a matter of principle, at SILATEC always. Our P7B glass with polycarbonate also provides high UV protection4. Normal P7B glass, i.e. armored glass, does not provide this. SILATEC P7B glass filters the UV radiation to ensure that valuable pieces of art or carpets are protected and are not fading. However, the visible light can shine through: Therefore, as compared with the green tinted armored glass, it is color-neutral.
