Bulletproof glass. Anything can happen outside.
Nothing inside.

Normal bullet-resistant glass is thick and green.
Bulletproof glass from SILATEC is significantly more secure. Thinner.
And crystal clear at the same time.

No matter what happens outside: you sit inside, drink a glass of wine and read a book. Ballistic glass from SILATEC defies even the most brutal attacks. Because we send it through hell in our tests.
The ballistics test according to the European standard EN 1063 is only the beginning. In addition, we test our bullet proof glass with a variety of weapons. With the Kalashnikov AK 47 and “standard ammunition” for example. But also with other military weapons – loaded with hard-core bullets or special incendiary devices. An inferno. But the glass wall can withstand even sniper rifles like the Russian Dragunov. (For this weapon we have test certificates according to the Russian “GOST” ballistic standard.)

SILATEC vs. Kalashnikov ...

Bulletproof glass for all demands.

Pistol, revolver, rifle, sub-machine gun or Kalashnikov – at SILATEC you will find bullet proof glass for all threats, certified and tested. According to all rules and standards: in Europe in bullet-resistance classes according to DIN EN 1063 (BR1 to BR7), in Russia according to the GOST standard or, for military purposes, according to the NATO standard Stanag.
If this is still not enough, we will test individually according to your specifications. Because SILATEC develops bulletproof glass that fits your requirements perfectly. Regardless of whether it is a single ballistic glass pane or entire buildings, bulletproof glazing for new construction or retrofitting of existing buildings. Our bulletproof glass is surprisingly thin and light – perfect for windows and doors that can be opened and closed very easily. Quite different from conventional, thick and cumbersome bullet-resistant glass – which, by the way, offers significantly lower security levels. Just ask us.

Armored glass
SILATEC Glass

Standard bulletproof glass or SILATEC glass?

Armored glass is not necessarily bulletproof glass: because standard security glass simply comprises multiple laminated layers of glass. This makes it thick, heavy and greenish – but by no means secure.

Bullet-resistant glass from SILATEC is far, far lighter, thinner and bulletproof: because it’s only glass on the outside, with a core of extremely tough and resistant plastics on the inside. And it is also transparent. The attacker doesn’t even know he is up against bulletproof glass.

From inside the building, you actually see the blue sky as true blue, because you are not looking through green conventional bulletproof glass. And because of the low weight of our glass, the windows are easy to open – even large sliding elements.

How does bulletproof glass work?

The physics: when glass breaks, the fissures expand at approximately 10,000 km/h, diffusing energy. This is well above bullet velocity, which can be up to 3,400 km/h. Based on this principle, conventional bullet-resistant glass is designed to diffuse impact energy, with multiple laminated layers of varying hardness and flexibility resisting shattering. Unfortunately, the technology has its limits, as one layer after another breaks down under attack. The only way to increase resistance is to add more layers.
SILATEC has gone a step further. Our bulletproof glass combines high-tech plastics such as polycarbonates and proprietarily developed materials. The result: maximum transparency, toughness, elasticity and hardness.

Some applications for SILATEC
bulletproof glass.

Bulletproof glass for new buildings.

You want to be safe. But you also want your property to look good. With large window fronts that radiate modernity and freshness and present an impressively open, generous and elegant quality.
Suppose you choose bullet proof glass from SILATEC. No one will notice, because our ballistic glass is completely transparent. And as steadfast as a wall. Absolutely safe. If desired, it can even be equipped with a 100% UV filter that reliably protects your works of art or valuable carpets from fading. Nothing penetrates - just all the visible colors of the rainbow.

Or you can opt for normal bullet-resistant glass. It’s heavy. It’s thick. It’s green. And by far not as secure and solid as bulletproof glass from SILATEC.

Bulletproof glass for older buildings

Historic buildings are living culture, examples of the architecture of past generations – the art of building. The charisma and personality of the structure. Bulletproof glass from SILATEC fits in seamlessly and unnoticed. Because it is amazingly thin and even fits into many old frames that at first glance might appear unsuitable. Since the bullet-resistant glazing is also remarkably light, it is gentle on the often fragile mechanics. Opening the windows is not made more difficult, which is a noticeable advantage, especially with large window panes.
According to a study by the “Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony,” burglars prefer remote old buildings and, of course, windows that are easy to climb through. Not only ballistic glass plays a central role, but also the window frame. Here, too, we will be happy to provide you with comprehensive advice. Beautiful or safe? With our bulletproof glass you combine the best of both worlds.

Bulletproof glass for embassies.

We work all over the world. This is one reason why we are well aware that bulletproof glass faces individual challenges in every country.
In Switzerland, for example, it is quite common for a household to have a weapon, kept in a cabinet. This is because soldiers who have been decommissioned have the opportunity to take possession of their personal weapons. Such firearms are generally the “Sturmgewehr 90” from Sig Sauer or the SP 2022, a semi-automatic pistol from the same manufacturer. In the USA, no weapon is more common than the AR-15 assault rifle – also known as “America’s Gun” – the civilian version of a military rifle first built for the US Army in 1959. As many as 3.7 million Americans own this semi-automatic rifle.
In Russia you can expect the AK47 or AK74, the “Kalashnikov.” In countries with high levels of violent crime such as Iraq, Pakistan or South Africa, an above-average number of weapons are in private hands.
As different as the requirements around world are, our bulletproof glass can be configured individually to meet them. Because embassies in particular are exposed showplaces of world politics, they need a very special degree of seamless protection.

Bulletproof glass for corporate headquarters.

Retrofitting with bullet-resistant glass may cost less than you think. Because our bulletproof glass is so light and so amazingly thin, you can generally retain the existing frames. And our bullet-resistant glazing also has no effect on the appearance of your headquarters. After all, our ballistic glass is one hundred percent color-neutral (especially compared to conventional, green-tinted bulletproof glass).
How will the risk situation develop in the future? To be ready for the worst case scenario, it is best to act today and prepare for tomorrow.

Which protection class is right
for your requirements?

The best thing to do is let us advise you directly, because we have been working intensively on this subject for two generations. This is the easiest way – no need to read any further.

Unless you want to know more. In that case, we are glad to inform you: we have divided our portfolio of bulletproof glass into three categories – based on three weapon groups for different attack scenarios – so that you can quickly find your way around.

(1) Handguns such as pistols and revolvers, for attacks from close range.
(2) Rifles with standard ammunition, for attacks from a greater distance. And
(3) rifles with special military ammunition (hard-core or incendiary), for attacks from a greater distance and with even greater penetrating power.

The penetration power of the weapons increases with each level. In the first step, consider which threat scenarios you want to protect your building against. (In case of doubt, it is advisable to inform yourself about the current police recommendations in advance.) Then, with our support, you select the desired resistance class and turn your building into a fortress – with bulletproof glass.

Bulletproof glass vs. Kalashnikov.

The AK47 is probably the best-known assault rifle in the world. A dangerous, globally widespread weapon – also in Europe – developed by Mikhail Kalashnikov as early as 1947. The further advanced version is called AK74, with many licensed manufacturers scattered all over the world. To produce the perfect bulletproof glass to counter this weapon, we are uncompromising: we work and test in the home of the Kalashnikov, in Russia. The test certificates according to the Russian standard GOST officially document the resistance of our bulletproof glass to this dangerous weapon.

How to test bulletproof glass? With live gunfire.

The different global testing standards are one thing. The state ballistic testing authorities, for example in Russia and Germany, regularly issue letters and seals for bullet-resistant glass from SILATEC.
But that is not enough for us. Because in practice there is no “standardized” attack. That’s why we send our ballistic glazing through hell. We test it with special task forces, e.g. with members of the German special unit, the Austrian Cobra, and with police and military units in selected countries around the world – including South America and Asia. Whether attacks using an axe, car or assault rifle – bulletproof glass from SILATEC means that anything can happen outside. Nothing inside.

Bulletproof glass for the world –
from a village in Bavaria.

It started when the leftwing German terrorist group RAF became active. Even then, when the potential danger was greatest, SILATEC built security on the highest level in glass.
To this day, and always when there can be no compromise on security, the path leads to Gelting, at the foot of the Bavarian Alps in Germany. For two generations, SILATEC has focused here on security glass and nothing else. The machinery to produce SILATEC's safety glass is specially developed in-house, because only this unique process makes unique products possible.
In addition, there is a touch of obsession involved: a passionate and tireless drive to guarantee you absolute safety – no matter what’s going on outside.
Today’s customers include the world’s first addresses: jewelers, art museums. Embassies and private houses. G7 and G20.

FAQ's

How does SILATEC make bulletproof glass?

Glass panes of different thicknesses are bonded over their entire surface with tough plastics - often polycarbonate. The individual sheets are placed on top of each other and bonded with SILATEC's special liquid adhesive. The material mix of glass, polycarbonate and polyurethane gives the bulletproof glass its particularly high resistance. After the bonding process, the panes have to cure for two days. After that, the bullet proof panes can be further processed or installed into insulating glass.

Where is bulletproof glass used ?

Bulletproof glass is used not only in military vehicles. You will also encounter bullet-resistant glazing in government buildings, embassies, corporate headquarters and increasingly in private villas. And where you do not expect it at first sight:  The elephant enclosure, for example. Or in the vehicle cabs of construction machines and excavators – to protect drivers from occupational hazards. The glass wall around the Eiffel Tower in Paris is made of bulletproof glass. The inauguration of the American president also takes place behind bullet proof glass.

Did you know that protective windows in lathes and milling machines are also made of bullet resistant glass?

So armored limousines and police cars are just the beginning of bulletproof glass applications.

What is bullet proof glass made of?

It may be called bulletproof glass, but it's often much more than just glass...

How does bulletproof glass work?

There is no simple answer to this question. How bullet proof glass works depends very much on the type of bullet and the construction principle of the bulletproof glazing...

How does bulletproof glass behave in actual firearm tests?

A word of caution: it’s called bulletproof glass, but it only stops the ammunition for which it was designed. If the bullet-resistant glass is attacked with a more powerful weapon or ammunition with greater penetrating capacity, the bullet can pass through the glass. The shooter should also be aware that a considerable number of dangerous glass fragments are thrown back in his or her direction. Even over a long distance of several tens of meters. The same applies to the protective side of the bulletproof glass pane. A distinction is made here between those that have no splinter exit on the protection side (NS = no spall) and those that can be expected to splinter on the defense side (S = spall).

Which is sturdier: laminated glass or bulletproof glass?

The sturdiness, or more precisely, the static load-bearing capacity, depends largely on the thickness of the glass pane. Since bulletproof glass can also consist of laminated glass, the question is rather: How thick is the glass pane? A 100mm (4") thick sheet of glass has a greater static load-bearing capacity than a laminated glass pane that is only 50 mm (2") thick. A different behavior is seen in burglary protection. Even 100mm (4") thick bulletproof glass can be destroyed with a sledgehammer in less than a minute. SILATEC glass can easily resist this for about 10 minutes, because it contains impact-resistant plastics.

Why is the term “bulletproof glass” wrong?

The term “bulletproof glass” could suggest that it is “absolutely impenetrable.” Absolutely impenetrable does not exist. Each bulletproof glass type protects against the weapon/ammunition for which it was tested. Alternatively, terms such as: ballistic glass or bullet resistant glass are used. It is not so much a question of right or wrong, but rather of understanding the threat scenario the glazing protects against. However, “bulletproof glass” is the most frequently used term in English.

What breaks bulletproof glass?

This will probably remain possible with a rocket propelled grenade (RPG). But few people are aware of the fact that it is possible to smash even 100mm thick bulletproof glass with a sledgehammer. In less than a minute. Unless the bullet proof glass contains enough polycarbonate – an extremely impact-resistant plastic. In that case the bulletproof glazing can withstand many, many minutes of blows with an axe or sledgehammer.

Which handgun caliber will go through bulletproof glass?

Here is a simple example: consider bulletproof glass developed to protect against a 9mm pistol with soft-core ammunition. The bulletproof glass can withstand this bullet: three shots on the same glass according to the European bullet test EN 1063, but if a Kalashnikov AK47 is fired at the glass, it is most likely to allow penetration.

How thick does glass need to be bulletproof?

Bulletproof glazing is available from approx. 20mm (3/4") thickness and can at best protect against small-caliber handguns with soft ammunition. Bulletproof glass must be considerably thicker to protect against large calibers with high penetration power. Such glass can be 100mm (4") or thicker. So there is no generally valid answer to this question. The required safety glass thickness depends on the weapon, the ammunition used and the design principle of the bulletproof glass pane. Commercially available thicknesses are between approximately 20 mm (3/4") and 150 mm (6"). Bulletproof glass with polycarbonate is approx. 50% thinner and 50% lighter than safety glass without polycarbonate.
